FAQ
How Sideline Hero works. The answers under Using the app are the same ones you’ll find in the app, under Settings → FAQs.
Using the app
Getting Started
Open the Teams tab and tap + to add a team. Give it a name and tap Save team. Team colours and a logo are under More options.
Open the team and tap Add player. Only the name is required. Jersey number, skill level (Strong, Average or Developing) and positions are under More options. Save and add another keeps the form open for the next player.
Setting Up a Game
Open the New Game tab and select your team. Opponent and location are optional, under Game details.
Under Game settings, choose the number of periods, the period length and the sub cadence (see Choosing When Subs Happen). Playing-time priority decides who gets more court time: Equal shares it evenly, Developing favours your developing players, and Strong favours your strongest. Manual cadence doesn't use a priority.
Tap Next: Select players →, tick everyone playing today (at least five), then tap Continue to Starting 5 →.
To set your usual periods, length, cadence and priority once, use Settings → App settings → Game defaults.
Save for later sets a game up without starting it. It shows under Upcoming on the Dashboard, and you can tap it there to carry on.
Choosing When Subs Happen
Sub cadence decides when the plan schedules substitutions. Choose it for each game under Game settings, or set a default in Settings → App settings → Game defaults.
Auto: the app paces subs and picks how many, to keep minutes even.
Every X min: a fixed number of minutes between subs. You set the interval.
Per term: a set number of subs spread across each period.
Manual: you make every sub yourself. You can build a plan first to get reminders, or skip it.
With Every X min or Per term, Subs per Rotation sets how many players change at each sub.
Fill-in Players and Practice Games
If someone is playing just this once, add them on the Select players step: type their name in Fill-in player name and tap Add fill-in player. They play and are subbed like anyone else, but they aren't added to your roster or to season totals.
For a practice or scrimmage, turn on Practice mode under Game settings. Court time is still tracked, but the game's stats don't count toward season totals. The Practice filter in History shows just these games.
Starting 5
Pick exactly five starters, or tap Smart Pick to choose them from skill level and recent playing time.
If Review plan before starting is on, which it is by default, you see the substitution plan next. Change any sub you need to, then tap Start Game.
With Manual cadence, tap Build Plan → to open the plan screen, where you can build your own plan by adding, changing or deleting subs. To play without a plan, tap Skip and start without a plan instead.
During the Game
Tap the play button beside the clock to start it, and tap it again to pause.
If your clock drifts from the scoreboard, tap the clock, or choose Adjust timer… from the ⋮ menu, and set the time. Nobody's recorded minutes change, and the rest of the plan is reworked from the new time.
The Court tab shows who's on and who's on the bench. Tap ON COURT or BENCH to change the order: total time, time on (or time on the bench), name or number. Both switch to total time after the first sub. The Plan tab lists every sub: Edit plan changes the next one and Skip next skips it. The Score tab appears when live scoring is on (see Live Scoring).
When a planned sub is due, tap the sub strip and confirm with Substitute. UNDO, at the top of the game screen, reverses the last substitution.
The screen stays on while a game is open, so your phone won't go to sleep mid-game. To change that, go to Settings → App settings → Keep the screen on.
Substitution Alerts
The sub strip counts down to the next planned sub. It reads NEXT SUB, turns green with WINDOW OPEN when it's time to make the sub, and turns red with OVERDUE if the window passes.
To see who comes off and who goes on without tapping the strip, turn on Settings → App settings → Show who's in the next sub. It shows first names, or jersey numbers if you choose Numbers.
As the window opens the phone gives a short vibration. At the planned time it vibrates and plays a tone, and if the window passes without the sub, the tone and vibration repeat every 10 seconds by default. Tap Snooze to quiet the alert for a minute.
Change these in Settings → App settings. The Sub alerts card sets the window around each planned sub, Haptics controls the vibration, and Sound alerts controls the tone, how often the alert repeats, and Play through silent mode, which is off by default.
Manual Subs
To make a sub the plan didn't expect, tap Manual sub at the bottom of the Court tab, choose who comes off and who goes on, and confirm.
The bench is listed with the players who've had the least court time first. The rest of the plan rebalances around the sub you made.
Injuries and Foul-outs
Long-press a player on court or on the bench, pick a reason (Fouled Out, Injured or Other) and tap Remove. If they were on court, you choose their replacement next.
Their share of the remaining minutes is spread across the rest of the squad.
A player removed as Injured or Other can come back: tap them under Injury or Other and tap Return. A player who fouled out can't return.
With live scoring on, the app alerts you when a player reaches 5 fouls and offers to take them out.
Live Scoring
Live scoring is off by default. Turn on Track live score in Settings → App settings → Stat tracking to add a Score tab to the game screen.
On the Score tab, tap to add 1, 2 or 3 points or a foul for any player, and points, fouls and steals for the opponent. Undo reverses the last stat.
Assists, blocks and steals for your players can be switched on in the same place, with Track Assists, Track Blocks and Track Steals.
Court time is tracked whether live scoring is on or off.
Period Breaks and Overtime
To end a period, tap the period button beside the clock. When the period's time runs out it reads END and the period, for example END Q1.
If a sub is due at the break, choose End & sub to make it as the next period starts, or End without sub to move it to early in the next period. The next period is set up paused, ready for you to start.
If the clock ran past zero by 15 seconds or more (the default), you're asked whether to count the extra time. Count it credits that time to the players who were on court, and Discard ignores it. Turn the question off, or change how long to wait before asking, under Settings → App settings → Overtime.
Ending a Game
After the last period, tap the period button and confirm. Enter the final score, then tap End game & save.
To finish before every period is played, choose End game early… from the ⋮ menu. End & save keeps the stats, and End & delete removes the game completely.
The Game Summary shows each player's minutes and stats. To fix a stat afterwards, tap the edit button on that player's row. To change a saved final score, tap the score. Both work when you open the game from History too.
Game History
The History tab lists your completed games. Filter them by result (All, Wins or Practice) and, when you have more than one, by team and by season.
Tap a game to open its summary. Swipe a game to delete it. You'll be asked to confirm, and it can't be undone.
Seasons
Seasons group a team's games so History and player stats can be viewed one season at a time. They're optional: turn off Use seasons in Settings → App settings to hide them everywhere.
Add, rename and archive seasons on a team's page, under Seasons. Archiving hides a season from New Game but keeps its games.
A new game goes into the team's latest season unless you pick another, or none. You can change a game's season any time from its summary.
Season fairness nudge, off by default, flags players who are behind on season minutes before a game and offers to give them a boost.
Season Minutes and Player Stats
With seasons on, Season minutes on a team's page shows each player's court time against an even split of the team's total. Tap Export CSV there to save it as a spreadsheet.
Tap a player on the team page to see their stats game by game. When seasons are on, switch between This Season and All Time.
Fairness Card
The Game Summary can show a Fairness card: a rating of Excellent, Good, Fair or Poor for how evenly court time was shared, and the biggest gap between a player's actual and target minutes.
It's off by default. Turn on Show fairness card in Settings → App settings. The Time Share column in the player table is always shown.
Even-up Suggestions
With Manual cadence, the app can suggest one late-game sub that evens up court time. It shows as a green strip, like "Even up court time: Sam on for Alex". Tap it to set up that sub, or tap × to hide it. It disappears by itself if you make a different sub first.
It's off by default and only appears with Manual cadence. Turn on Even-up suggestions in Settings → App settings.
Sharing and Exporting
On a game's summary, tap the share icon at the top of the screen. Share summary sends a readable recap, handy for a team chat, and Export CSV saves the game as a spreadsheet.
For a whole season, open the team's Season minutes and tap Export CSV.
For the full game record as a data file, use Settings → App settings → Your data → Export last completed game, or Export game data from the ⋮ menu during a game.
To share a team with another coach, open the team and tap Share team file. If the team has seasons, pick one or the whole team. To share one game, tap the share icon at the top of its Game Summary, then Share game file. Send the file however you like.
The other coach opens the Teams tab and taps the import button at the top, or goes to Settings → App settings → Your data → Import team file. Importing adds the games and players they don't have, and it never changes a player they already have. If a game is on both phones but differs, they choose which version to keep. Opening the file straight from a chat app isn't supported, so save it first, then import it from the app.
A game you delete on your phone comes back if someone sends a file that still has it.
Everything goes through your phone's own share sheet, so it only goes where you send it.
Your Data
Everything you enter is stored on your phone. There's no account and no cloud sync, and Sideline Hero never sends your data anywhere. It only leaves the phone if you share or export it yourself, or if your phone's own backup includes app data.
To wipe it, go to Settings → App settings → Your data, tap Erase all data and type RESET to confirm. Deleting the app also removes everything it stored on the phone.
Your data only moves to a new phone if your phone's own backup, such as iCloud or Google, includes app data.
Before you download
Is Sideline Hero free?
Sideline Hero is free to download and use. The free version shows ads. An optional Premium purchase (an annual subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase) removes ads and adds new premium features as they're released.
Which devices does it run on?
iPhone and Android. There's no separate iPad version, but the iPhone app can be installed on an iPad.
Does my team data leave my phone?
Your team, player and game data stays on your phone and is never uploaded. The free version does use the internet to show ads (Google AdMob) and to check Premium purchases (RevenueCat), but those never receive your team data. Setting up and running a game works offline. Your data only leaves the phone if you share a game summary or export a file yourself, or if your phone's own backup includes app data.
The privacy policy has the details.
Do I need an account?
No. There's no sign-up, no login and no password.
Can I move my data to a new phone?
Only through your phone's own backup. If your iCloud or Google backup includes app data, restoring it on the new phone brings your teams and games across. There's no transfer inside the app.
